New automation has created opportunities to increase scalability and speed in milling and turning. Each of these cutting services can now be achieved through a variety of 4 & 5 axis Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines. 4 & 5 Axis CNC machines can be programmed with high precision, and a spectrum of drills and turning tools. With this new multi-axis machining, we are able to offer improved speed, accuracy, repeatability at reduced prices.

Both CNC milling and turning begin with a model created in a 3D Computer Aided Design (CAD) sofware. This computer model is converted into a CNC program, which then translates commands to the designated CNC machine. Once the digital legwork is complete, CNC milling and/or turning operations can be executed with minimal input from the operator.

In CNC milling, the automated mill is able to conduct multiple operations along 4 or 5 axis to cut the component per the programmed dimensions. Similarly, a CNC turning center programs single-point and live cutting tools to conduct multiple operations. The workpiece rotates at changing speeds as the tool creates sufrace cuts to exact specifications.

CNC machining is excellent for high production runs of thousands of pieces with short lead times, as well as a means to provide secondary finishing on previously formed components. Threads, slots, or holes can all be added for further definition.

CNC Milling and Turning Services at Helander

At Helander, we are equipped with two CNC mills up to 4 axis and six CNC lathes that allow for component machining and tooling/fixturing. This allows for metal spun and hydroformed components to reach our customers in a fully machined level of completion.  We also machine assemblies that will be welded or fastened to our spun and hydroformed components.  Our largest lathe can swing 96” inches with up to 72 inches between centers and our mills have a work envelop of 20 X 40 X 30 inch.
