CNC Machining: Milling & Turning
New automation has created opportunities to increase scalability and speed in milling and turning. Each of these cutting services can now be achieved through a variety of 4 & 5 axis Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines. 4 & 5 Axis CNC machines can be programmed with high precision, and a spectrum of drills and turning tools. With this new multi-axis machining, we are able to offer improved speed, accuracy, repeatability at reduced prices.
Both CNC milling and turning begin with a model created in a 3D Computer Aided Design (CAD) sofware. This computer model is converted into a CNC program, which then translates commands to the designated CNC machine. Once the digital legwork is complete, CNC milling and/or turning operations can be executed with minimal input from the operator.
In CNC milling, the automated mill is able to conduct multiple operations along 4 or 5 axis to cut the component per the programmed dimensions. Similarly, a CNC turning center programs single-point and live cutting tools to conduct multiple operations. The workpiece rotates at changing speeds as the tool creates sufrace cuts to exact specifications.
Advantages of CNC Milling and CNC Turning
CNC milling and turning offer multiple unique advantages, including:
- CNC makes it possible to implement a wide range of designs, patterns, and details that cannot be achieved manually.
- Given the high level of accuracy provided by CNC machines, measurements and thicknesses can be repeated from part to part with a high degree of reliability.
- Operators can control CNC equipment to increase the production speed.
- A large draw to CNC machines is 24/7 operation, which can significantly increase production.
Compatible Metals and Applications
CNC milling and turning machines are compatible with an expansive range of metals, including:
The specifications of the project will ultimately determine which process would be more suitable.
CNC machining is excellent for high production runs of thousands of pieces with short lead times, as well as a means to provide secondary finishing on previously formed components. Threads, slots, or holes can all be added for further definition.
CNC turning is ideal for smaller production runs and prototyping needs. Internal and external threading can be accomplished.
CNC Milling and Turning Services at Helander
At Helander, we are equipped with two CNC mills up to 4 axis and six CNC lathes that allow for component machining and tooling/fixturing. This allows for metal spun and hydroformed components to reach our customers in a fully machined level of completion. We also machine assemblies that will be welded or fastened to our spun and hydroformed components. Our largest lathe can swing 96” inches with up to 72 inches between centers and our mills have a work envelop of 20 X 40 X 30 inch.
Upholding a (+/-0.001) inch precision tolerance, our advanced CNC turning and milling equipment routinely works with a wide variety of materials, ranging from copper, brass, stainless steel, carbon steel aluminum, and titanium.
We invite you to contact Helander today to inquire about our advanced CNC turning and milling capabilities or to learn more about any of our other service offerings, which include metal spinning, hydroforming, welding and abrasive polishing.
CNC milling leverages computerized controls and rotating multipoint cutting tools to shave materials from a workpiece and produce a desired part or product. The movement of the cutting tool is controlled by computer instructions, which guarantee repeatability and extreme precision.
Helander has been providing many Fortune 500 companies and small businesses with top-notch forming and fabricating solutions for over 80 years. We combine our experience, advanced machinery, and highly skilled technicians to provide high-quality CNC milling solutions tailor-made for your specific needs and budgets.
This web page will focus on the unique features, benefits, machines, and common types of CNC milling.
CNC Milling Services
At Helander, we use new automation to enhance scalability and speed in our milling solutions. High-tech 4 and 5 axis CNC machines perform all our cutting services. These machines are programmed with high-precision drills that produce accurate and repeatable custom designs, requiring minimal work from the operator. Our largest CNC mill has a 40-by-40-by-40-inch work envelope.
Some of the industries and applications that our CNC milling solutions serve are medical, aerospace, transportation, oil and gas, military and defense, electronics, marine, metal fabrication, and packaging.
Advantages of CNC Milling
Compared to traditional machining, CNC machining centers offer high-speed, high-accuracy, and high-productivity milling, drilling, and tapping. Because it is computer-controlled, CNC milling produces consistently accurate and reliable results that cannot be created manually. Some of the unique benefits of our CNC milling solutions include:
- Easy implementation of complex projects: CNC milling allows efficient implementation of intricate designs, patterns, and details that would not be possible with conventional machining.
- Unmatched precision and accuracy: We utilize the latest CNC machining tools and technologies to produce even the most irregular shapes with a high level of precision and quality.
- Increased productivity: CNC machines can typically work 24/7. Depending on the application, our technicians can adjust the speed of equipment to boost production.
Machine Tools Used for Milling
There are several types of CNC milling tools designed for specific functions. For example, solid end mills have a variety of applications, such as creating molds or textured edges. Exchangeable milling heads allow for additional versatility, as they can be switched out quickly depending on the application.
A wide selection of tooling for Milling allows for a variety of machining processes such as drilling, boring, thread milling, tapping, counterboring, countersinking, profiling & reaming.
